Pet Relocation to Portugal

Pet Relocation; The ‘Pet Travel Scheme’ provides for qualifying domestic pets to travel to and from EU member states without undergoing quarantine provided they had been vaccinated against rabies . Note: Ferrets are prohibited as domestic pets in Portugal. Portugal banned the importation of domestic ferrets to avoid cross breeding with their indigenous ferrets in the wild. However this ruling essentially contradicts EU rules. A person wishing to take a ferret to Portugal should consult the Portuguese authorities for the latest information. Pets from countries outside the EU member states should have a Export Health Certificate signed, stamped and dated within 4 days by a licensed government veterinarian in the country of origin. These pets must also be accompanied by a rabies vaccination certificate showing that the animal had been vaccinated at least 30 days, but not more than 12 months, prior to export. The neutralising antibody titration (at least equal to 0,5 IU/ml) must be performed in an approved government laboratory on a sample issued by a veterinarian at least 30 days after the anti-rabies vaccination was given and three months before travel. These are guidelines only which are subject to change. Contact the Embassy of Portugal for current requirements for bringing pets into their country
